Ham Sok Hon Academic Society (HAS)
The First Nobel Peace Prize Nominee of Korea!
Ham Sok Hon was the first Korean to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Nominated in 1979 and 1985 by American Quakers, Ham devoted his entire life to civil rights activities and the peaceful, nonviolent movement.

A representative Korean thinker!
In 2008, Korea hosted the World Congress of Philosophy, where Ham Sok Hon was introduced as a representative Korean thinker of the 20th century. Although Ham’s ideas and philosophy were formulated in 20th century Korea, his views and ideas are still valid even in the 21st century global community.

Respected the differences and uniqueness of each individual!
The recent bomb blast incidents in Norway show the danger and problem of exclusivism toward other religions, cultures and races. Ham pursued philosophical and religious pluralism between East and West, religion and science, and mysticism and rationalism.

In HAS we will read and discuss Ham Sok Hon’s writings on history, pacifism, Taoism, Quakerism, religion and society.
